Default Re: to push or not to push - that is the question

[ QUOTE ]
In retrospect, I wished I'd bet the flop, but from observation I was almost certain MP would bet it and I decided to check raise.

Was this a mistake? Should I be betting out regarless in this situation?

[/ QUOTE ]

If the player is in the habit of making continuation bets post flop when he raises pre flop, a check raise is not a bad idea. A 1/2 pot sized bet may not be a bad idea if you think an over pair will raise what he percieves as a feeler bet.

Many hands like AJs or an over pair are not likely to call the all in raise on the river. You are left with 44, JJ or 88 as potential all in callers, only one is good. You are destined to lose all your money anyway against 44 or JJ so you may as well raise an amount that AJ or an over pair would call. A $200 raise seems about right. If he puts you all in you have to call and hope for 88.
