Yeah, Apple just has to be proprietary on most everything they do, and wont let you copy your own songs to it as a mounted drive, like, well, every other sane rational mp3 player out there. If you really dont want to use itunes there are other things out there, like this winamp plugin to let you sync it with winamp 5
