For most of the countrys history, presidents voluntarily chose to follow the example set by George Washington, limiting their tenure to two terms or less.

After FDR convinced himself that he was indispensable to the nation, we saw the "love of power, and proneness to abuse it" Washington had warned us of. We had to amend the Constitution.
