My first reaction was that the call with 55 was awful, but when I saw that BB is so short-stacked that he has to put up 20% of his chips to post the blind, I wasn't so sure. If he had a guarantee he was up against 4 overcards, for example, it's a trivially easy call. My guess is that if you ran all the possibilities, including the possibility that the original raiser will fold, it would turn out to be a correct desperation move, although I wouldn't stake my life on it.
