So you checked, and he checked behind you? He deserves to lose to 68.
As for the flop move, I would've bet whatever was most likely to get him to fold, and of course called any raise. The problem I see with c/r'ing all-in is that if he has a suited As, he may price himself in with what's accidentally the best hand, or he may just move in when it's his turn. I would usually bet pot, occasionally check-fold, if my opponent was the type where I knew he had AA, KK, QQQ, or AK (and he bet enough).
