Default Re: AK or AQ on a junk flop

Okay, so we're talking limit hold'em and the question is, "how do you play overcards after the flop?"

Ed Miller has a whole section on this topic in SSHE. The reason why he treats this so carefully is because much money is lost here both by continuing to play when you shouldn't and giving up when you shouldn't.

There's really too much in that section to summarize here, so if you have the book, look at that section. If you don't, get the book or at least go to the bookstore and read it there. But, really, you need to own the book.

The strength of your overcards are based on many things including your reads on your opponents and the coordination of the board. Here are some highlights Ed gives:

<ul type="square">[*]Overcards prefer ragged boards[*]Overcards prefer few opponents[*]Overcards are strengthened by backdoor draws[/list]
Also, your position will dictate how to you play out the hand. If you are on the button and all players check to you, you will often bet. If it comes to you bet and raised, you'll usually fold, etc. If you're first in, and you think your opponents missed (ragged board with few players) you can try betting and hope for folds. If you get a call, you may still have outs if you pair up.

This is a very complicated topic, so do read Miller's treatment if you can.

Regards,

T
