Seems like

1) he probably doesn't want a call here and is trying to discourage a push from you (AQ, AJ, 88-44) or
2) he wants to eliminate other players and give you the opportunity to push (AA-99)

I think you're probably in a coin flip situation with someone who can knock you out. Even if you're ahead, at best it's 70-30 and you're probably gonna get a spite call.
