I have seen people go Up on an 8 in a higher lower game from 1-10 for more than $100 000.

I have no idea what this means.
Do you mean they are doubling-down on a hard-8?

actually blackjack tournaments can be +EV with the appropriate strategy.

Stanford Wong (one of the blackjack card-counting pioneers) wrote a prettty decent book on casino tourney strategy (blackjack as well as craps and 3-card poker tournament strategy for example).

It's not JUST about playing against terrible blackjack players (although this is kind of similar to poker-tourneys in that regard I suppose).

a couple of the BJ tournaments I've seen on TV have been kind of interesting but weren't done THAT well imo. But they do focus on the bet-size pretty heavily which one needs to do.

One of the guys at the final-table of the BJ tourney on the travel channel was a guy I dealt too when I used to deal BJ. He came to our casino in Tunica when he had a $125k BJ tourney that used a pretty mediocre format imo.
I was dealing the regular cash games and he was at my table wearing his name-badge (which is how I specifically remembered the guy when I saw him on the final-table of the one on TV....he had the same name as a high-school gym teacher I had so it stuck in my head).

I guess this guy (Mel Edwards is his name) must frequently hits some of the bigger BJ tournaments that are out there.

I too would be interested in playing an occasional online BJ tournament.
I have played a couple of live BJ $40 tournaments (back before I even knew how to play poker actually) but didn't get very far. Made the 2nd level a couple of times but never got to the final-table.
