It's an iffy call, but I could see someone making it. Your bet is telling people that you either have a draw or a vulnerable hand. You could have a medium pair, or a pair with a straight draw, and are just hoping people will go away. It's not unreasonable for A5 to think he's best, or have several outs if he's not. About the only other hand that gives him problems is ace-medium.
To sum up, I think your bet confused him into making an incorrect read, but he made the right move based on that read.
