My thoughts on this do not have as much to do with the players themselves than they do with how the media would react regardless of the player's personalities.

I think the media would have made a bigger deal out of the event if David won. Media outlets that didn't cover the story would have, and those that did would have covered it more in depth. I find it difficult to believe that someone could make a compelling argument to the contrary. "Youngest player ever" winning "5 million dollars" is quite the headline. More media coverage, more new players.

IE. If Sammy won in 2003, I truly believe it would have been less of a story than the Moneymaker win.

Also, in regards to "working professional adults having more money." That has nothing to do with overall popularity. The younger the person is, the more likely they're willing to jump on "the next big thing". In the grand scheme of things, 16-24 year olds are the tastemakers. From music, to technology, and on and on.
