say you lost $40 at .50/1 and won $400 at 20/40 over a total of 200 hands, 100 at each of the stakes.

Your BB/100 for the day would be (-40+10)/2 = -15BB/100. Yet obviously you profited on the day. It can also work the other way (negative net, positive BB/100).
