Let me tell you about LBJ - My late aunt worked in the West Wing office of the President from 1962 – 1970. I actually met LBJ. LBJ was a totally nasty bigoted sonofabitch. He made Clinton look like a choirboy. He had one motivation and one only – politics. If it got gains for him or the Democrats politically – he’d do it. He was probably the coldest person my aunt ever met. People were there as tools for him to use and discard. I will give him this – he was a straight shooter. If he didn’t like you – he told you. For LBJ it was all about politics and how much federal money he could send to Texas (why do you think NASA is in Houston).
Truman desegregated the military to get the black northern vote. He may have though it was right too but I’m 50-50 on the motivation after reading a lot of his papers.
BTW I was born and raised in Virginia and went to school in Tennessee so don’t consider me a Yankee (non-southerner)
