With TAGish preflop stats, the three-bet, and that flop, I can't think of what you'd be ahead of.
I'm guessing villain has something in the neighborhood of KK-JJ and is not going to fold.
That being said I like the line you took as it does let you get to showdown whereas like you said a check behind on the turn will probably induce a bet on the river that you can't call.
