If you think you can fold your way to a seat then fold before the flop. If not, just push-in preflop. If you get called by 88, who cares. But pushing might get someone to fold middle pair if they don't want a race.
In the actual hand, once you get raised you might as well stick the rest in, since the pot will be too big for either of you to fold. Villain is getting such good odds on your turn AI he has to call (certainly with anything that was worth a re-raise preflop).
