I checked out sample photos and they're the first ones I've found to be really impressive under a variety of situations. This camera is probably $1200 to $1500 more than I was planning on spending (w/lenses and all the other sh**).

dpreview.com. He has great comparisons of cameras in different classes, and there are plenty of knowledgable people on the forums.
Only downside to the D70 is the minimum ISO setting of 200.
