Laying the 4&10----why is it a bad bet?
[/ QUOTE ]
Lets say you lay 4 for $100.
If a 7 is rolled before a 4, you get your $100 back and win $50 minus a 5% commission, for $47.50.
IF a 4 is rolled before a 7, you lose the $100.
There are 6 ways to roll a 7 and 3 ways to roll a 4.
2/3 of the time, a 7 is rolled before a 4, and you win $47.50.
1/3 of the time, a 4 is rolled before a 7, and you lose $100.
You win $95 and lose $100 for every three times you make this bet, for an average loss of $1.67 per $100. That's not horrible, but it's better to bet the pass line, and then take odds on a 4 or 10 if it's rolled. If you bet the pass line and take double odds on any points that are rolled, then you reduce the house advantage to only about half a percent.
