If he folds, I had him beat anyway. But there aren't many hands better than mine which will fold. So I don't see how much there is to gain by betting here.

I think without betting the river you're not giving him that final chance to fold and it also exposes your hand, showing weakness, that gives him a chance to bet hoping to get you to fold to his bluff.
