Which paper you read? If it was the one about 'optimal' strategies, you obviously didn't read it very closely: Optimal strategies operate in a vacuum and do not rely on opponent modeling or prediction. It does not "supposedly learn your patterns". Perhaps you are confusing 'optimal' and 'maximal'? These terms are clearly explained in their papers.
Which bot did you play? Vexbot (maximal) and sparbot (optimal) are the LHE bots to be afraid of, but Vexbox needs a few thousand hands against you before it starts kicking your ass.
