Sounds like you are treating 6 MAX more like final table 6.
How LARGE of a BUY IN max are you playing?
If it's sub $100, FPS should be avoided, IMHO.
Do a search on short-handed play and take in as much as you can.
Personally, it's a flop game for me.
I can outplay most, after the flop.
Don't forget your continuation bets.
