I'm actually in the minority here: I think a couple != a pair.
There are a pair of cars = 2
a couple of cars/a couple cars = up to 3
a few = 4 to 6
several = 6 to 10 or so
many & a lot = depends on what you're talking about.
If I meant two, I would say two. "A couple" just means plural and less than a few.
