I just tried riffling like this about 20 times and it seems really clumsy. Just go ahead and make a "V" between the halves and then simply lift the two touching corners with your thumb and let them fall. The edge of the deck facing the players should stay on the table.

The part about "nearly silent" is definitely correct.

When I riffle, the heels of my hands and my fingertips are on the table surface. My wife riffles with her fingertips on the table and the heels of her hands resting on or hovering above the deck halves due to smaller hands.
