His descriptions of places read like the small plaques you find outside of them. His characters are flat and serve the plot exclusively - they are dumb or insightful as they need to be.

That's practically a criterion for liking the book.
His biggest hook is that he is drawing on very bold themes that resonate deeply in the culture - art, religion, history. The fiction that goes along with it isn't worth reading.
If you want to get some insight into the past and get a good story, try "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett and "Conspiracy of Paper" by David Liss.
