2 mistakes on your post:
1) At no point did he ever cold call.
2) A7o is a pretty damn good hand on the cutoff when it's folded to you. I don't see how on earth you can fold this. And since you should play it, raising is probably better, in order to hopefully buy the button and take control of the hand against typical low limit players who often call with anything in the blinds.
