Maybe a n00b question, but what would be the reasoning to lead out on the river after calling down? (or did you mean only when a scare card comes?)

You bet the river after check/calling the whole way in case the villain has been betting the flop and turn with KK or QQ and plans to take a free showdown with the A on board. If this is the case and you check, you miss out on a bet.
