I don't think many do more than 4 NL tables at once, but lots of people do 8, 12, or more limit tables. Imagine you're making 2 BB/hr at 3/6. Once you learn to multitable well your winrate might drop to 1.5... MAYBE. But now you're playing 10 tables, so you're making 15BB/hr instead of 2. You've gone from $12/hr to $90/hr. Over a 20 hour week that's a difference of $1600. Pretty significant difference.
