I think I would have bet the flop in this situation. Yeah, you have the straight flush draw, but if you don't want to tangle with the other big stack like you say, trying to win this with a pot sized bet would do fine.
Bad mouthing you for a poor play AFTER he wins is just poor sportsmanship, and I don't think you should sink to his level.
