If the marginal corporate tax rate is 50%, half of what a company donates would have otherwise been paid in taxes. The other half would have been profit. It's still $50 out of the corporate purse for every $100 they donate.

Corporations make donations for a lot of reasons, ranging from true concern by the officers and stockholders to cheap public relations and advertising. Sometimes corporations make donations to get on the nightly news. Sometimes the people in charge do it because they think it's the right thing. Whatever their motivation, it still costs them real money.
