What is host trying to accomplish? Is the primary motivation to get a game together or to make money?

I play in three different home games. Occasionaly we play tournaments, but the house charge is always the same. In each one, the house charges a flat $10 per seat and provides sandwiches, snacks, cookies/pie/cake, pop and bottled water. There may even be hamburgers, brats or pizza. If you want booze or beer, BYO. This works very well for us as the host is not trying to profit, just cover expenses.
