You've had marginal success at 3/6 which I'm not sure how exactly to take it, but I'll take it to mean you're a small winner.

Play 2/4 as it's a more profitable game than 3/6 for even good players, build up a proper roll, and you'll be far better off when you actually get to 5/10 because you'll be a better poker player and have the bankroll to withstand any swings.

I'd wager you just hit the upside of the variance curve.

If you really think you might like 6 max, try the 1/2 6 max and get the hang of it.
