Most of my friends not to mention the occasional
total stranger. Relevant part of the latter link:
Perhaps the highlight was an incident in a club with my best man Charlie.
We had arranged for a private table in the Vegas club "Ice", but there
were a few unknown women in our area thanks to the girl-seeking skills of
some of our compatriots. Charlie and I were having a heartfelt conversation,
during which I noticed one of the drunk girls obviously eavesdropping.
I didn't particularly mind, though I wondered what was keeping her so
enthralled. Her facial expressions betrayed total fascination, yet the
content of our dialogue surely didn't warrant that.
Finally she interrupted us. I expected this to be some innocuous query,
but no. She began to make a fervent, rambling plea that I not go through
with the intended marriage, because I was about to RUIN THE LIFE of some
poor woman. Kathleen's, presumably. Somewhat taken aback, I tried to
comprehend what she was saying and realized that she had concluded that
Charlie and I were gay lovers. I think she "deduced" this because of an
analogy I made between woman-man relationships and man-man relationships,
and fifteen minutes of subsequent eavesdropping apparently provided her
with no convincing evidence to contradict her initial hypothesis.
Charlie and I both sort of stared at her. I told her I'd take her good
advice under advisement, and that perhaps she should leave now. Charlie
was, appropriately, quite a bit less diplomatic. She eventually had to
be dragged off by one of her friends, still offering admonishments to me
for concealing my homosexuality and for deceiving my poor fiancee, who she
pitied for being so completely taken in by my pretense at heterosexuality.
You can't make this stuff up.
