Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

I wish I had an immediate link to it, but, in order to avoid having to jump to a webpage every time I wanted to look at it, I finally just saved the webpage to my computer. I know you can find a link...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

Yes, I've been in that situation several times as well, although I usually try to start thinking about its possible arrival early enough to be able to catch a true (relatively) good hand. But...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

Hmmm... just did a comparison. The iteration makes the medium-high pairs much less dominant, but they still get higher marks than in K-S. On K-S you have ... AKs, QQ, AKo, JJ, AQs, TT, ...

Here,...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

I like this list a lot. I think you do need the iteration because the way they hold up against the superior hands is going to strongly influence just "how good" the hand is.

I don't mean to keep...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

Yeah, that was the one I used originally. Do you know the methodology behind it? At least in the heading, it seems to suggest that it might be based on 2 billion actual hands and what they won. If...

Re: Possible next step

I agree. And I don't see why with your idea one can't do the same from other positions really. Also, the shorthanded situations several people have talked about have some interest. I just hesitate...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

I agree fully. I think a lot of the skepticism expressed in this thread may be due to over-ambitious ideas concerning its applications.

There are way too many factors that go into general starting...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

True, but I think there are some dangers of misleading yourself if you go very far with it on starting hand selection in most situations. For one thing, once the betting has started, you're no longer...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

I agree pretty much with all of this. And another dimension that adds to the problem of using this for starting hand selection in a ring game is the type of flop required to get a truly big hand. I'd...

Re: Possible next step

Yes, I thought that whole analysis was very interesting, although mainly applicable if you get shortstacked. Basically, the calculations showed precise conditions under which all-in was a +EV play....

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

I think the whole idea is only relevant in cases where you're basically playing the hand all or nothing pre-flop. As soon as you are capable of betting the hand all the way through, everything...

Possible next step

I think exactly the kind of situation you're talking about is where this consideration is most relevant. Basically, you're sufficiently shortstacked in a tournament situation that you're not going to...

Re: Median Best HE Starting Hand (solution)

99 sounds about right for a 10 player table. I think the difficulty is going to be selecting the ranking system, because that's very much going to depend on the context. On the Landrum system, just...

Re: Median Best Holdem Starting Hand

True, but you can put an exact percentage on the frequency with which a given hand wins against a random hand heads-up (or, for that matter, against any number of random hands, but the results will...

Re: Median Best HE Starting Hand (solution)

Ok, here goes. First, I'm going to skirt the ranking issue for the moment and just assume that we have one (Karlsson-Sklansky might be a good start, but it depends on what we're doing with the...
