With really tenacious opponents, I like starting hands like these, because you can expect to get paid handsomely when you hit your set. Of course, you have to play reasonably well when you hit one...

One of the "local vets" isn't even old enough to gamble in his home state. I, on the other hand, am old enough to gamble in two states at once.
