Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
But, for the common usage of the term "subjective" (even in the fields of ethics and philosophy)

I disagree with this statement but it's pretty much beside the point...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
You still didn't give me any general principles that I'm ignoring.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I thought I did, but I'll be more clear. In that first example, both men were acting on the...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
I'm not, so I think there are subjective & objective aspects to morality.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep and that appears to be a result of just not thinking quite clearly enough about the...

[ QUOTE ]
Yeah, you've said it before... but never explained. Please expound. Examples. More info. What general principles? How am I ignoring them?

See your first example...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
By that definition, I'm definitely in the subjetive morality camp.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm in neither, by those awful definitions.

When I say there is "objective" morality, I mean...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
I can show that from a Darwinian point of view there is more Darwinian advantage to a male in being promiscuous and a female being faithful, without saying that I therefore think human...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
This is the difference of opinion, right here, I think. To me, there is only one moral principle: "act with the intent to do good". So, when I say morality is subjective, I mean those...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
Can you define what you mean by "subjective morality" and please explain thoroughly what you mean by "values".

Subjective morality, in its traditional philosophical...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
It means something may be right for one person, and wrong for someone else, because of the a lot of factors (that I've listed).

[/ QUOTE ]

I realize that, but the problem is...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
I'm not sure why "subjective" means only a difference in *values*. Even then, values are at least partially resultant from a person's knowledge, background, and beliefs, aren't they? So,...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
1) When you say "*identical* circumstances", do you mean the people involved must be identical?

[/ QUOTE ]

No. As you said, that'd be meaningless.

[ QUOTE ]
3) Do you...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

[ QUOTE ]
Not all things that bring happiness are accepted as good. Not all things that decrease happiness are accepted as bad. This is why the standard for good must come from eleswhere.

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

So, how exactly would one measure, calculate, or determine this objective morality?

Determine it by starting from basic ideas/principles. Rand laid a solid...

Re: Absolute Morals and evolution

There are no gods and morality is objective. Human morality is based on human nature, which has evolved over thousands of years and is objective. Learning this is hard and most people don't bother...
