Re: Hilger Hand Example (9h3h)
My analysis in the book was brief and echoed most of the responses in this thread. Basically I say that you probably have the best hand and checking is risky since your opponents might take a free...

Re: the pause
Mushi, I've received a few comments about that article and I probably could have done a better job with the wording. The article's intention was speaking from a relative standpoint.
Of course a...

Re: Foreign Earned Income Credit
Very interesting discussion. I prefer not to elaborate too much as I am not a CPA. I do realize from this discussion that I probably ought to take the $80K exclusion out of my book as I am not...

Re: Only Breaking even on Party Poker
Midnight, just to clarify, the book states a "good" player, not an expert player. I defined a good player as one big bet an hour. Expert players would do much better in a shorter time period.

Re: JJ in Early Position
Of my charts, the JJ hand has been discussed a lot on this Forum and my own. If you read the text in the Advanced chapter, you'll see where I also say you can raise with hands 77 and higher in...

Re: *Official* Party Friday Special
That wasn't me.
I wrote a book on Limit, but I've probably had more success in NL tournaments than I have in Limit tournaments. That is definitely true in terms of live tournaments. For example,...

Re: Pocket 99s
just to chime in here. There are many situations in Hold'em where it is too simple to say Always raise or Always call.
For example, which is a better scenario, raising with 99 and getting 2...

Re: How does it look ?
Jeff, I get a lot of responses about my recommendation for beginning players to limp in early position with JJ. People say I am crazy and therefore my book isn't any good.
I don't have a...

Re: Part 2
Ed, first of all I must commend you and your energy in writing another poker book so soon after Small Stakes. It took me a year after completing ITH before I could even think about writing another...

Re: Part 2
Ed, your points about post-flop play are quite valid. As far as pushing edges, this is not a main concern of mine regarding beginning players. I think my book advocates pretty aggressive play...

Re: A Point for Matthew Hilger.
Mebenhoe, I understand your point but I don't think it is as clear cut as you indicate. I believe it is much easier to debate advanced strategies than it is to debate how a beginning player should...

Re: Hand example #8 on pg.35
Brooktoon, even at $3-$6 the same reasons would apply here. Note that not only is the Qs probably no good, but any spade matching the kicker card of your opponent with a King. As noted by the...

Re: \"Exceptionally\" Large Pot
Most people agree that the two of the biggest mistakes made by poker players is playing too many starting hands and continuing with their hands too far after the flop. Hence the general rule that...

Big Bluffer, This hand example is really not even a bluffing hand. You are more likely to have the best hand in this situation against a "typical" opponent. Actually, a better way to play this hand...

Re: Third Discounted Outs Example on p24
Dgold, how much you discount outs is dependant on a lot of factors. For example, how many players are seeing the flop? Was there a raise preflop? Was there a reraise preflop? What are the betting...
