I saw TJ Cloutier play this hand today
 

10-20 NL at the Commerce. I was waiting for a seat watching the game. Folded to T.J in MP and he opens for 120. The button calls as well as the BB. T.J has about 1000 and the other two have him covered.

Flop: 10 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 10 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Checked to T.J, he bets 200, button folds SB calls.

Turn:K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Checked to T.J, and he checks behind.

River: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

BB bets 500 and T.J quickly calls.

BB has 10 9 offsuit for a flopped full house. TJ has A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]10 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. I thought this hand was very strange. Being short stacked, with only about 6 hundred left by the turn, why would he not put the rest of his chips in? There are plenty of straight draws on the board, and lots of possible worse hands he could be called with. Was he trying to induce a bluff on the river? Or was he afraid the king made the BB's hand? Either way, it's clear with only six hundred left he is going with this hand, and I was shocked he didn't put the rest of his money in on the turn. Any thoughts?

I think he played it pretty well actually.
On the turn if he bets and is raised, he pretty much has to pay off as he will be pot commited. However, unless he's playing against maniacs, if he bets, no worse hands will call him, except a worse Ten. He checks behind on the turn to A) induce a bluff on the river and/or B) lose the minimum when he is behind.

I would agree completly if the stacks were deeper. But on the turn he had only 600 left and there was already over 700 in the pot. With that board and a short stack, there is no way he is getting away from his hand. (I dont think.) I do think it's possible he was trying to induce a bluff on the river, although he couldnt have loved the king, since JQ just got there.

Didn't catch the part about him having 1000 to begin with. Looks like he is just trying to induce a bluff like you said, I guess. I don't know.. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I don't see much threat from the straight draws; if the opponent has QJ, the straight has hit, and the only other really dangerous draw is 78, which seems unlikely. He's either dead already, or his opponent is drawing to less than four outs. Why not invite his opponent to bluff him all-in?

The board is now 10 10 9 K. If his oppenent is holding an 8,J or Q he as a straight draw.

I think the play looks ok. Yes, he's taking a chance of letting a straight draw beat him, but he's also making sure of getting the best chance of river $$ from the likes of any 9 or any K or whatever else might also be around, as well as inducing bluffs.

He was a bad enough player player to call a 200 dollar raise before the flop with 10 9 offsuit. He could have easily had a 9 with a gut straight draw.
