External USB HD not performing well

I dont know where this problem came from, but now it seems I can't stream video from my external HD. I get a device I/O error and the video drops out or pauses randomly. I tried increasing the buffer size, no dice. Any ideas? Same results with winamp or media player.

Re: External USB HD not performing well

Is your USB connection USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? You should be able to find out in the device manager. If you computer is more than a few years old, it is probably 1.1. USB1.1 is much slower than USB 2.0. If you have 1.1, you can buy a card for 2.0.
