I think it helps foster the right frame of mind. i.e. that your play is what's importent and not the money.

When I'm in ring games, I just put in a weird amount of $$ per table. Like 47/68/36 on each table. Its hard to tell if you're up or down, as long as you dont compulsively look at the cashier.

You could make the argument that it fosters the opposite frame of mind: money is so important that the mere sight of its loss is a devastating blow. The current state of my chip stack must be cloaked in darkness, lest I succumb to its mesmerising powers.

The current state of my chip stack is a banal, irrelevant fact. Not something to be feared or made taboo. That, in my opinion, is the right frame of mind.
