Villain was very loose preflop and I had seen him make some big bets or raises previously with middle pair. Should I have called?

The fold is good, villain in all likely had the full. You may have felt better about it if you'd bet more on the river though. A 1/3 pot size bet might encourage a bluff from a LAG player who reads your bet correctly as weak. Then again throwing money into a pot on a double paired board sucks. If I decided to bet I would make it at least half the pot, probably more. I might have checked this river though, planning to call a similar bet from villain who I read as likely to bluff in this spot.
