Optimal rest time between sets?

I've heard anywhere from 1-4 minutes. I'm getting frustrated trying to find the correct answer. So what is the optimal rest time between sets?

Depends what you're trying to do. If it's less weight/lots of reps, and you're after toning/aerobic benefits, <30 seconds.

If heavier 60-100 seconds tops.

NEVER 4 unless you're involved in very heavy weightlifting.

Generally you can take 5 minutes between sets. If you feel like you're dominating your opponent (ie you won 6-1 or 6-0) you probably want to hurry and get back on the court. If you got your butt kicked in the last set you want to drag out the break as long as possible. Try faking a cramp and talking to your coach.

Only in Austrian strongman events where they have to call the competitors out of the beer tent
