Can I get a ruling please. . .
 

My friend just busted out of a tourney. He pushed and was called by somebody who flipped his cards while there were still players left to act. If you expose your cards with players left to act, do you kill your hand?

Im not sure that it kills the hand. Definatly bad form though. How serious is your game?

monthly tournament for the last 8 months. For most players this is probably the only poker they play, but we've also been doing this long enough to take the rules more seriously. There are usually 25 people and it's $20 buy in one rebuy or add on for $25, so the money is not insignificant. Is there a universal rule about exposing your cards with others still to act? Or is it even generally accepted that showing with others left to act kills your hand?

With respect to home games, there is no universal rule about anything.

It all depends on how seriously you want to take your game

According to Roberts Rules of Poker:

The following actions are improper, and grounds for warning, suspending, or barring a violator:

Revealing the contents of a live hand in a multihanded pot before the betting is complete. Revealing
the contents of a folded hand before the betting is complete. Do not divulge the contents of a hand
during a deal even to someone not in the pot, so you do not leave any possibility of the information
being transmitted to an active player.


Not cool for sure but nothing about calling a hand dead.

Obviously the answer is it depends on the house rules.

However if you are following the TDA rules, exposing ones cards in this manner would not kill the hand, however the player may be given a penalty.

I played in a tourney at the Trop in AC, and this happened at my buddy's table. A guy bet post-flop and a lady called, and everyone else folded. The dealer said that the hand was head's up (you know- 1 on 1). The lady thought that meant the guy was all in, so she flipped her cards. She showed two pair.

They let her finish the hand, which she lost big-time, because the guy had top set and knew exactly what she had. After the hand was completed, she had been assessed a 10-minute penalty where she was anted and blinded out.
