Which kind of poker was first?

Which kind of poker was historically first - limit or no-limit? If limit was a later invention as some movies seem to indicate, then when limit was invented (and how no-limit made a comeback)?

No limit as a cash game faded away because it became clear that bad players went broke too fast. When the poker boom brought back interest in no-limit, B&M casino operators learned from the online sites that they could minimize that effect by restricting how much money a player could bring to the table.

So, when we see in the movies people playing (usually on a riverboat) and betting away their farm and whatnot it's not even close to reality?

They were able to add money from off the table if needed. In fact the term "the nuts" came about because guys sometimes bet their horse and buggy. They ran outside to get the lug nuts and put them on the table for their bet.
