Best non all-star baseball player ever

Who's the best player in baseball history to have not played in the all-star game? Obviously, players who were active during an era when there was no all-star game in existence do not count.

I don't know enough about older players to make any guesses, but the only names that pop into my head now are Eric Chavez (who is only 27 and I'm sure will be an all-star eventually), and Tim Salmon, who I only know never was an all-star because I follow the Angels. Any other picks?

yea, most people when they find that out are shocked.... but he's a perennial slow starter (don't you remember how bad he was early this season?), and when you combine that with the fact that he was up against Glaus and A-Rod so far in his career, it's hard to get consideration.

As sooga touched on...he's never really been much of a snub either because he's so horrible in the springtime. He's often the best 3b in the 2nd half of the season though.

Kirk Gibson comes to mind, too.

I take it you mean by career? If by season it would take a whole another meaning. This is an interesting subject. I am not sure I may search other forums and come up with an interesting answer.

Thank you,

Oh yea, definitely career. Players with only one good season and never making an all-star team are a dime a dozen.

Preface: I am not sure about this ... its a long time ago.

Yes, Gibson never played in an All Star game. However, in 1988, I think he either was voted in, or there was talk about him being a replacement for an injured player.

Anyway, he made it clear that he was not going to go because he had plans to go home to Michigan.
