Betting an odd about to induce a call

I have seen this a few times and I wanted to know if is a known strategy in online poker and if it is successful. If there is a big pot say 5000. someone may bet 762. They would have more chips in their stack but online this random small bet might look like an allin bet and the next player might call what he thinks is an all in.
