Cheap players in LV
 

I have a friend that is a poker dealer who moved to Las Vegas for a little while to work at the Wynn...he returned to Seattle after working in Vegas for about 2 months. He says tokes are not as good in the bigger Vegas poker rooms. He told me he once pushed a $4000 pot and did not get toked anything....
He told me that the middle limit games are even tighter in this regards...
Just wondering why this is....? Higher Chip denominations? Trying to get the most out of the winnings...i.e. being stingy?
At the same time while playing 3/6 and 4/8 live I know that many low limit players toke way too much...3 and sometimes 4 dollars a pot...even for small pots.

Lower limit players are more there for the experience or whatever (good time players). Some mid-high level players are playing for the rent check, tossing $1/pot can build up quickly over time.

The first casino to figure out how to get more hands per hour, forbid tipping, and pay a reasonable wage to dealers --- is going to make a killing.

Great, all we need is another thread where pro wanabees can cry about the customary expenses of the game. There's enough of those in the Internet forum right now.

I've heard a lot of top pros and dealers talk about how the better tippers are the best players and the completely recreational players. It's the ones in the middle - trying to make money playing poker but not good enough to REALLY make money - who skimp on tips and complain about rake or time charges.

This isn't always true, of course, but you can see from people's responses in a lot of recent threads that the mentality is rampant.

The cheap players probably consist of two types:

People that play all the time and want to maximize winnings;
or newbies to the whole casino poker thing in general.

The first time I went to a B&M I had a loud, funny mid-age lady. I was not aware of tipping the dealer. The first time I won a pot she said something like "My wages don't pay my rent girrrrl" and I thought to myself "Then get a better job."

By my second hand I caught on though. LOL. I felt really dumb that day.

Wow. If a dealer said something like that to me I would stop tipping them for the rest of the down.

I'n not sure how to start this, because I don't want to be offensive, but somehow I think that dealer tipping is a somewhat strange practice. I mean, I tip a server at a restaurant based on the quality of service, if he or she is considerate, checks in to make sure I have what I need, etc. There's no exact right way to be a server, some general guidelines, but nothing definative. For a dealer, it's following an exact set of rules. Don't flip the next card till the actions complete, ensure all bets are placed properly, etc. As a dealer, it seems to me anyway, that there aren't a ton of judgment calls. You follow the house rules, and you deal in a technically correct manner. I feel that $2 a pot (for what $50/hr) is being overpaid (I'm taking a stab at this hourly rate given $2/pot, 25 hands/hr, I could be way off). It's the same reason that I don't tip a bellhop $5/bag (I do tip them, I know they couldn't live if people didn't, and I'm not saying being a dealer is of the same difficulty level of being a bellhop). It's a job that requires no special abilities, to my knowledge doesn't seem that terribly difficult, and I don't feel deserves much more than $10-12 an hour. (You're talking to a guy who literally dug holes and lifted rocks for $12 an hour, so I probably won't be very receptive to the idea that being a bellhop or a dealer is an exceedingly difficult job).

I would like to say that I do like the idea of a dealer being paid a decent wage (does $20/hr sound reasonable? you're talking 40k/year), and perhaps letting players know that the dealer is well paid, but that an occasinal tip for exceptional service (not just average like you would tip for in a restaurant) is appreciated.
