Dunnett\'s statistic?

I'm looking at lab rats with 3 groups: control, A+B, and A. About 12 rats in each group. The data has been analyzed using Dunnett's statistic.

What is Dunnett's statistic? When do you use it and how is it different from a Student's t test?
