Flopped Set in Unraised Pot

Can't help but have second thoughts after things like this happen.

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (8 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG calls, Hero calls, 3 folds, Button calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds, UTG folds.

Final Pot: 3 BB

With no likely draws out there, is this a situation where it would be correct to check the flopped set?

I originally bet out expecting to get action from any ace, but I guess nobody had one

I bet there. nh.

Just so you know, generally 1/2 is posted in micro limits and 2/4 and above is Small stakes.

Your bet and reasoning are right on, but you were destined to make nothing after the flop. Don't miss that you picked up information on UTG. He limped in w/o an ace and probably without KK-TT because a lot of players with those hands will not automatically step aside just yet. So, there is a good chance UTG plays hands unfit for early position and if raising works to isolate people at this table, you could occasionally raise with typical calling hands when he limps and see the flop with an advantage.

On a disconnected flop like that you have to hope someone has an ace, because if not they're all going to be scared you have one.

Bet the flop, no question - you're probably more likely to get action on the flop here than you are on the turn.

Raise pre-flop.

I raise this with some frequency pre-flop, esp in the limper is weak.

Bet the flop and hope to get action from A. If no one has one, then too bad...

I doubt raising is as +EV as calling in a loose passive game. The prospect of one or more cold callers and the big blind coming in makes me skeptical that I'm going to be able to show down unimproved 8s very often.

5 handed you need to bet the flop here. If they all fold you weren't going to make much on this hand anyway, but it will be a rare occasion everyone folds here. Don't second guess yourself.
