if yuo dont value out my set, then you have failed right?

odds of setting the flop with a pocket pair: 7.5:1

if i pay the big blind to see a flop, and i make my set, then if i don't manage to rake in 7.5 X the big blind, then does this count as a failure in the long run?

No..not really because

1) Most of the time you'll make well moer than 7.5x BB to make up for the times you don't.

2) You may have the best hand preflop and therefore didn't necessarily need to hit your set to win.

3) You can pick up the pot a lot in position without ever hitting your set

4) You can continue with a low pocket pair after the flop even if you don't make your set on favorable boards (like a straight draw

My point is that you can still make money when you miss your set, so yo udon't need to make the full 7.5x when you do.

You probably need to average something like 10x the big blind to make it profitable maybe a little more b/c sometimes your sets will go up in flames set over set etc. I wouldn't worry about times where you didn't make 7.5 BB b/c you will run into situations quite frequently where you make almost 100BB with your opponent basically drawing dead. The distribution looks something like this (3.5, 10, 25, -100, 100, 100, 6, 4, 15, -60). I wouldn't worry about once but if it happens consistently (e.g. your average after 400 sets is less than 8 )you may want to consider folding small pocket pairs. Low limit NL this consideration really isn't that likely. Higher Stakes short handed is where I started to encounter this problem.
