Download the manufacturers software, you might have to make a boot disk and boot into a DOS program and format it from there.

Are you on Windows XP? Do you have service pack 1 installed? If not that could be your problem.

Please follow the instructions below for creating and formatting a new partition in Windows XP:

1. Access Disk Management in Windows XP. Right-click on My Computer, left-click on Manage, and then left-click on Disk Management.

2. In the lower window pane, you will see a list of available IDE devices. Locate the desired hard drive to partition and format. You should see a black bar indicating unallocated space for the drive. Right-click on the black bar (unallocated space) to see a menu of available options.

3. Left-click on New Partition.

4. The New Partition Wizard will appear. Left-click on Next.

5. Leave Primary partition selected and left-click on Next.

6. Choose the partition size and left-click Next.

7. Leave Assign the following drive letter selected and left-click on Next.

8. Leave Format this partition with the following settings: selected and choose the file system you want. Left-click onNext.

9. Left-click on Finish.

10. Under the drive it will indicate that the drive is formatting and will show you a percentage complete. Depending on the size of your external hard drive and the speed of your computer, it could take more than an hour to format the whole drive.

Keep in mind now you'll have two oddly sized partitions. I would consider making a small partition of like 50 gigs for all your programs and a 150 gig one for your music, porn, etc. But it's not a big deal.

You also have to make sure you have at least SP1 installed for windows XP. Then go about making the partition
