Surfing

I'm living in LA now and a friend is going to teach me how to surf. I am a complete noob so I need some advice about what kind of board to get and other various [censored]. I don't want to spend a lot (sub $200). My friend said to get a shortboard or else I'd be buying twice. Not exactly sure what he meant but hopefully you guys can help me out.

Oh and is there a 2+2 equivalent forum for surfing?

use a rental shop that will credit all rental to the price of a new board when you know what you want. you will end up using a short board but will take alot longer to get decent by starting out with one.

its easier to learn on a long board, but once you get better you'll want a short board, hence buying twice.

work your shoudlers out and make sure you're a good swimmer.

unfortunately thats the extent of my suring knowledge.

Get a longboard to learn on. Don't listen to him.

Bah, I learned on a longboard and never switched. Much more fun I always thought. Course this was in the little waves in SC.

First: Spend some time in the Ocean...Do you like cold water?

Second: Go to Aquarium of the Pacific = see what big sharks really look like?

Last: Decide if you want to spend a lot of time in cold water disguised as a shark's favorite food?

You suck as a southern californian if you're not joking. threat of attack=nil. seals are scarier than sharks.
