UTG+2 checks, Hero bets t300

** Wasn't sure whether to CB the flop or check it through. On his call, I got a bit freaked out -- draw, overcards, or a ten? Do you fire again on the turn here?

Hand 2:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t100 (10 handed) converter

Button (t665)
SB (t1982)
BB (t1676)
UTG (t2574)

UTG+2 bets t300, Hero folds.

** This look ok? Do I need to be more aggressive here? I felt a bit awkward with the allin player.

Hand 3:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t150 (10 handed) converter

BB (t1900)
UTG (t4864)

Button (t3087)
SB (t770)

Preflop: Hero is MP3 with A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
UTG calls t150, .... Folds to Hero ... Converter messes up... Hero pushes for t1165.

** Too aggressive here? AT is a bit mediocre with an UTG limper. I just really wanted to pwn him.

MP2 (t1259)

** Standard to fold this UTG here, right?

Hand 6:

** I was trying to sort of figure out during this tournament what was meant by some of the better posters here by pwning limpers and mixing up my play. Is this play way off the wall, or does it have a spot in the repertoire of an MTTer?

One of the specific questions I have that the tournaments I played tonight brought up were . . . I read threads about people mixing up their play in MTTs, reraising with air, and generally playing a non-ABC game.

Now, all of this is a bit of a mystery for me, and I know it can't all be solved through this thread. But one question might, at least generally. As to when it is ideal to reraise with air, or to punish limpers with air.

First off, what type of raiser/limper are you looking to punish? Tight (this means he may have a real hand), Loose (this means he may call), what? Also, is there a certain texture of the table, with respect to what stack sizes are yet to act, that we are looking for? Is this almost always going to be a button play? Is it a play that should only be used when we can take out the limper/raiser (so their "tournament life" is on the line?)

I know these are difficult questions to generalize about. Perhaps you can use my J5 hand, and through telling me WHAT WAS WRONG about it, help me to understand what a correct situation would be.

Re: Some hand content, and seeking some advice

Hand 1:
I make it 200 preflop -generally 3xBB adding 1xBB for every limper. I bet the flop to the tune of 200. I don't like giving free cards when the board is draw heavy. The way you play i might check behind on the river, but that's read dependent

Hand2:
I'm betting the flop and if i didn't i'm not folding the turn getting like 6-1. Your hand might still be good and that's why we bet the flop.

Hand 3:
I like the push
Hand 4:
Standard
Hand 5:
Is well, borderline. I'd prefer to have some hand here or to have a read that this guy can lay down 77 to a raise like that. It's not something i would try at a low buyin where you might be looked up by something like 77.

In general- you have to be good to be able to mix up your play. If sirio raises 32s UTG it's because A)the players he plays are likely to be thinking, rather than donks and B) he's a solid post flop player. Not saying that you aren't or can't be but he's well... good.
Generally ABC play works fine in tournaments. Most MTT posters a solid ABC players but they pick the right spots- this is based mainly on reads which as you play more you get more used to making and relying on them. Just work on it and see why that play worked/ didn't work and you should be fine

Thanks for your response.

Do you think he bets at a dry sidepot with no pair here? I didn't think so, and I thought I was either drawing dead (trips/FH) or to six outs (which, I don't think I had odds for), and folded.

Do you ever just push preflop here?

Fire the converter messed up but in that AKo hand button pushed and got called and hero called too, do you usually bet into dry sidepots? Oh and if you can I would reraise allin preflop after the buttons push but I dont think you can because his raise wasnt big enough

Yeah, sorry, converter sucks. Button pushed.

And yeah, I couldn't reraise, or I definitely would have done so here. I wanted to be heads up with some dead chips. Wasn't a big enough raise.

I think, all things considered, I could have just pushed after the initial raise. Not sure though.

Hand 1 I think is ok. Hand 2, first of all, I would would raise a little more before the flop and also bet on the flop. I would assume UTG+2 would bet most pairs and since he checked, you want to get heads-up with the all-in player with some dead money. As far as pwning limpers, I think I have my best results in MTT's when I can apply this idea properly. I think the key is having some reads on the players involved, having a good image and looking for the right situation. There's nothing better than having 3 limpers, pushing with 10bb's and increasing your stack by 45% with no flop. Watch out for loose big stacks who limp alot but call any raise, short stacks who retardedly limp for 1/4 their stack, or someone who has shown they will limp with a strong hand before. Look for people who limp chronically but have previously folded to a raise, and weak medium stacks. It doesn't always have to be a move where you push, either.
